Portugal

Portugal is a fantastic destination that’s often overlooked in favour of its larger neighbour. It has everything you could look for in a holiday. If you crave golden beaches and sunshine, you can’t go far wrong with the Algarve. Want a culture filled city break? Then Lisbon or Porto will not disappoint. With a number of stunning buildings to view such as the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and São Francisco Church. Alternatively, you may prefer to venture into the interior of the country. Take a road trip and explore the traditional villages and soak up the beautiful Portuguese countryside in all its glory.

Reasons to book with us

Economy Car Hire works with a selection of suppliers in Portugal and only with those we trust implicitly. Our UK based head office is open 6 days a week and we operate a 24/7 emergency phone service to help with any problems you may have on the road. If it's something more serious, we also provide breakdown assistance thoughout the country.

Rest assured that whichever car hire supplier you book with, a fair fuel policy is available, meaning that you do not have to worry about unused fuel when you return the hire vehicle. You really will get the best value car rental in Portugal with us!

Portuguese Toll Roads

In Portugal, especially when visiting the Algarve or Lisbon you may need to use a toll road during your travels. Some of the car hire suppliers that we work with can provide you with a transponder for an additional charge payable locally. When you get a quote, click on the Show Rental Conditions link found underneath each vehicle. If you can see a section marked Motorway Tolls, a transponder is available and the applicable fees will be stated here.

Otherwise, you will need to visit a local Post Office or supermarket where credit can be purchased for use of the toll roads. Payment can be made 48 hours after use of the toll road, so you can pay the fee for your arrival journey but upon your return, you must wait for the bill to arrive from Portugal before settling the balance.

Which Portuguese airports do we cover?

The gateway to the Algarve, Faro Airport is the most popular airport in Portugal and as a consequence, the busiest. Arrive here and drive west to enjoy the Algarve and its ever popular resorts such as Albufeira, Portimão, and Lagos. Alternatively journey east, close to the Spanish border and discover a combination of golf courses, stunning beaches, and wondrous scenery are accessible in large quantities.

Lisbon Airport is often used by those wishing to explore the city limits of Lisbon itself before heading further afield. This coastal city is surrounded by beaches both to the north and south and offers a number of excellent many golf courses which will challenge even the best players.

Should you intend to explore the north of Portugal, Porto Airport will no doubt be most suited to your requirements. Some of the highlights include the Douro Valley to the east of the city and Braga to the north. Climb the numerous, zigzag stairways to Bom Jesus do Monte in Braga before sampling a selection of Port to recover!

There are of course a number of Portuguese islands to visit including Madeira, Porto Santo and Sao Miguel of the Azores islands. We offer car hire at all the major airports on these islands including Funchal, Porto Santo, and Ponta Delgada.
