Airlines are warned to clean up websites

Mounting confusion over information and prices on airline websites has prompted an investigation by the European Commission. In the investigation some websites were found to be adding extra costs at the last stages, not revealing availability or the best fares and not showing contract terms. Those websites found to be confusing customers with misleading information were warned to clean up or they would be shut down. Watchdogs such as the Office of Fair Trading in the UK will be responsible for ensuring that these websites show clear information and honest prices. The next step is to introduce an industry-wide agreement, whereby all airline websites will be required to adhere to a strict set of guidelines.

Web only check-in with Ryanair

Ryanair now requires all passengers booking flights to check-in online and to use ‘bag drop’ facilities at airports. There is no longer the option to check in at the airport desk. The airline will be phasing out its airport check-in desks by 1st October 2009. However, booking online still requires a fee. The £10 airport check-in fee will be replaced with a £5 online check-in fee per person per flight. Any person who has paid the £5 fee but has been unable to print their boarding pass will be charged an extra £40 per boarding pass to print it at the airport.
