Clear blue waters, idyllic fishing villages, beaches, vineyards, Roman ruins and walled cities are some of Croatia’s treasures; all of which make it a travellers paradise. All this can be enjoyed even more when getting around by car hire, enabling you to tailor your visit to places of interest allowing you to choose how long you spend in each place.
There are lots of things to see and do all over Croatia and we advise you to leave plenty of time for your journey to avoid travelling at high speeds to get to your destination. The maximum speed limit on motorways is 130 km/h, on open roads it is 80 km/h and in built up areas the speed limit is generally 50 km/h, unless a different one is indicated. Police can collect on the spot fines for motoring offences such as speeding. It is also worth remembering the tolls so that you can ensure that you have enough money at the toll kiosk, tolls are charged on the main route E59 and the E70 out of Zagreb and E71 from Zagreb to Split. Tolls are also charged on selected motorways, bridges and tunnels.
When visiting the built up areas of Zagreb and Split, it might be worth avoiding the rush hour times of 0700 – 0800hrs and 1500 – 1600hrs so that you don’t waste any valuable time in queues of traffic when you could be back at your hotel either planning your trip for the following day or getting ready to go out for the evening.
