Essential Driving Information

• Most road signs have an English translation.
• Traffic drives on the left hand side.
• It is advisable to obtain an International Driving Permit before travelling. You must also get a recognition permit at the AA in Colombo.
• You must wear a seatbelt in the front and rear of the vehicle.
• Vehicles do not stop at pedestrian crossings.
• If you plan to pass through a road surrounding a Government or military site, allow extra time for your journey as these roads are often closed for security reasons.
• If a driver flashes his lights at you, it means that he is asserting right of way.
• The blood alcohol limit is 80mg per 100ml of blood.
• The minimum age for driving a car in 18.
