Gibraltar Airport is a unique airport in itself because it is located only a few minutes walk from the city centre and is adjacent to the border of Spain. Due to lack of space in Gibraltar there is a road running through the runway towards Spain. This is closed when planes land or take off. In 2005 the airport handled roughly 400,000 passengers.
