Visitors driving in Slovenia should be aware that the driving culture here is slightly different to that of their own country. The penalties for breaking the law are quite high and strictly enforced by the police so it is important that you adhere to the driving guidelines set out below.

Essential Driving Information

• Traffic travels on the right-hand side of the road.
• The minimum age of drivers is 18 years.
• Winter tyres are mandatory from 15 November to 15 March.
• You must not use a mobile phone when driving.
• Drivers and passengers must wear seat belts in both the front and rear seats.
• A vignette system is in place and this must be displayed when traveling on motorways. These can be purchased from filling stations across Slovenia.
• The blood alcohol limit is 50mg per 100ml of blood. If you have been driving for less than three years, a zero tolerance policy operates.
• The police can issue on the spot fines, which must be paid in local currency immediately.
• It is compulsory to use of dipped headlights during the day.
• You must use hazard warning lights when reversing.
• If you are involved in an accident or breakdown, you must use a warning triangle and/or hazard lights.
• If you involved in an accident, the police must be called and a written report must be obtained.
• You must not overtake a bus transporting children when passengers are boarding or alighting.
