Visitors driving in Slovenia should be aware that the driving culture here is slightly different to the culture in their own country. The penalties for breaking the law are quite high and strictly enforced by the police so it is important that you adhere to the driving guidelines set out below. There are lots of things to see and do all over Slovenia and we advise you to leave plenty of time for your journey to avoid travelling at high speeds to get to your destination. Speed limits are as follows: 50kph (30 mph) in built-up areas 90 kph (54 mph) outside built-up areas, 100 kph (60 mph) on open roads, 130 kph (78 mph) on expressways, 80 kph (50 mph) for a car with a caravan or trailer travelling outside built-up areas or on expressways, and 90 kph (56 mph) for motorcycles outside built-up areas. Fines for exceeding the speed limit are high and have to be paid on the spot.
