Serbia is certainly away from the well-trodden tourist track but is fast becoming a popular tourist destination, with many of us finding its stunning scenery hard to resist.

The clear lakes, fast rivers and gorgeous mountains provide some fantastic scenery and an idyllic setting for a holiday. Getting around by car is a great way to take in the scenery and visit points of interest.

Essential Driving Information

• Vehicles drive on the right-hand side.
• At a junction, if the road goes straight ahead, vehicles on the right of your vehicle have right of way.
• Away from built up areas, the horn should be used to indicate that a vehicle intends to pass.
• During winter months in snow affected areas, fitted snow chains are obligatory.
• It is illegal to use both a hand-held mobile phone and a hands-free device when driving.
• Seat belts must be worn by passengers in both the front and rear seats.
• Children under 12 must not sit in the front seat.
• The blood alcohol limit is 30 mg of alcohol per 100ml blood. For novice and professional drivers, there is a zero tolerance policy.
• It is compulsory to use dipped headlights during the day.
• Any person who is visibly under the influence of alcohol must not travel in a vehicle as a front seat passenger.
• You must carry a reflective jacket, and any person exiting a vehicle on a main road must wear this.
• On most sections of motorway, tolls are payable.
• You must not overtake school buses when they stop for children to board or alight.
