Netherlands Travel Guide

The Netherlands, also known as Holland is a great place to explore by car. During Spring, the fields are full of colour with tulips and daffodils, making up some lovely scenery to enjoy when travelling by car. Car is a good way to explore the countryside, especially places which are not connected by rail. Known as being largely flat, the Netherlands is an ideal destination for those who enjoy pursuits such as cycling or walking.

Things to see and do

• Rent a bicycle and explore the various cycle routes in the country, the flat landscape is ideal for cycling.
• Take a glass topped boat trip round Amsterdam's water ways and canals.
• Visit the Hoge Veluwe National Park.
• Drive across the Afsluitdijk, a 30km barrier which was built to close off the Zuiderzee from the North Sea. Motorists can stop at the lookout point half way across it and take in the view.
• Take a ride on the high speed lift up Euromast in Rotterdam and dine in the restaurant at the top of the tower, which overlooks the harbour.
• Stroll around the city of Gouda following the cheese map showing the main land marks around the city and Weighhouse Museum which is associated with cheese making in the city.

• Queens Day – this celebrates the birthday of the former Queen Juliana, it is one of the largest and most vibrant celebrations in the Dutch calendar (April).
• Kunsthal Cooking Festival of Real Taste – a three day celebration of food and drink, Kunsthal (April).
• The Netherlands Military Tattoo, Ahoy, (September-October).
