Fes is the fourth largest city in Morocco. It is split into three parts; Fes el Bali (the old walled city), Fes-Jdid (new Fes, home of the Mellah), Ville Nouvella (the French-created, newest section of Fes). Fes is not chic or glamorous like Marrakech, you will certainly get a taste of what a Morocco city was like one thousand years ago as modern life has barely intruded on this old city. Fes was capital city of Morocco for more than 400 years. It has 900 narrow alleyways, which can be explored on mule or donkey. Accommodation is mainly in the form of courtyard houses, known as ‘Riads’ and many have their own pools and steam baths, known as ‘Hammams’. Places to visit include the Batha Museum, the Karaouine Mosque, the Nejjarine Fountain and the palaces of Fez el-Bali. A popular event is The Festival of World Sacred Music which takes place in June.
