Boasting a wide variety of landscapes, skiing in Latvia is popular and rewarding. There are lower slopes to suit beginners and high hills for intermediates and the more experienced plus plenty of cross country terrain too. With lots of snow settling in the winter months too, you will find that Latvia’s 19 resorts are filled with skiers enjoying their winter getaway between December and April.

The popular resort of Baili is suitable for beginners primarily but also intermediates too with a 75%/25% split. As such there is a variety of both gentle and steeper descents. There are 7 slopes in total served by several ski lifts. There is a 3km cross country track and night skiing is available on the floodlit slopes. Additionally, there is a skiing and snowboarding school should you be visiting as a beginner or if you are looking to improve.

Sigulda is the largest of Latvia’s ski resort and the premier resort for downhill and cross-country skiing. In addition to the well-equipped and well-lit tracks, the bobsled and toboggan runs prove hugely popular with public. Sigulda hosts international skiing and snowboarding competitions each year. There are 8 ski runs as well as an excellent ski school and a range of equipment available to hire.

Ozolkalns is Latvia’s newest and therefore most modern ski resort which opened in 2007. It is a small resort offering two slopes with one chair lift and two T-bars for your use. There is also ski tuition available and equipment for rent.

Located around 50km from Riga, Kakisu Trase boasts the steepest slopes in the country and it proves very popular amongst snowboarders in particular, although skiers are of course more than welcome. The resort is suitable for children and adults of all ages and abilities with a great range of slopes, several ski lifts, equipment rental and a renowned ski school.

In addition to hosting several small tournaments, Reina Trase is very popular amongst cross country skiers. There are several lifts in operation and one distinct advantage of Reina Trase is that the slopes are never too crowded, allowing you to take your time if you are learning and giving you space and freedom if you are an intermediate. There is also a very large snowboarding park.

Zagarkalns is one of the larger resorts with 14 different ski runs which are served by 11 ski lifts and the resort features a sled only run plus snowboarding trails and a snow park for children. Ski tuition is available for all ages and there are also cross country trails to enjoy and explore.
