Things to see and do

  • Greece offers some good locations for windsurfing, the best locations for this are Vassiliki on Lefkada, Kefalos on Kos, Kokkari on Samos, Lalisos on Rhodes, Chrisi Akti on Paros, and Agios Georgios and Mikri Vigla on Naxos.
  • The shallow fast flowing rivers of mainland Greece offer excellent facilities for water based adventure sports such as rafting, kayaking and canoeing. Sea kayaking is also becoming popular on the Greek Islands.
  • Take part in some wine tasting at one of the various vineyards which open their cellars to the public.
  • There are numerous thermal springs, visit one of the various spas and hydrotherapy centres which have developed around these throughout the country and get some well deserved pampering as part of your trip.

  • Vikos Gorge in the Zagori regions offers a lovely setting for hiking and some spectacular views.
  • Visit the Temple of Poseidon on Cape Sounio, it is dramatically set on a cliff above the cape and is a familiar landmark to boats at sea.
  • See the dormant volcano on the island of Nissyros.

Festivals and events

  • Athens Festival, includes a range of performances including modern and ancient theatre, ballet, opera, jazz and classical music, most of the performances are held at the open-air Herodes Atticus Theatre. (February-March).
  • Independence Day and Annunciation is a religious and a national holiday. There are major festivities in many towns. (March 25)
  • The feast of Ayios Yeoryios (St George), the patron of Shepherds, is a big rural celebration, there is much feasting and dancing at many towns. (April 23).
  • Night of the Full Moon – on the night of the full moon in August, Athens opens up its monuments and archaeological sites to the public for free (August).
  • Dodoni Festival – performances at the Ancient Theatre of Dodoni (July-September).
  • Dhimitria Cultural Festival takes place in Thessaloniki. (October).
