Greece Ski Guide
Skiing in Greece
Greece is widely known as a warm summer holiday destination but a closer look reveals that it also offers skiing in a variety of resorts. Many people opt for the more popular resorts in Switzerland, France and Italy, but despite being an unknown skiing destination, the resorts in Greece offer some inexpensive, unusual skiing and can provide a cheaper alternative to the mainstream resorts.
There are several areas in Greece, which provide good skiing. The most developed and popular ski resort is the Parnassós Ski Centre or Kelária-Fterólakkas on Mount Parnassós, this is due to its wide range of facilities and close proximity to Athens. There are several beginner, intermediate and black runs in the resort so all levels of ability are catered for. The Parnassós Ski Centre resort is located 180km northwest of Athens close to the historical town of Delphi and the best way to get to the resort is to fly into Athens airport and then to hire a car so that you can enjoy the scenic drive up to the slopes.
There are also other well equipped resorts close by, these include Vórras (Mount Kaïmaktsalàn) near Édhessa; Veloúhi (Mount Tymfristós) near Kapeníssi in central Greece, Helmós near Kalávryta on the Peloponnese and Vérmion near Náoussa in Macedonia.
Greece’s ski scene is known amongst the locals and weekenders but little is known about it amongst the package tour operators. The cost of a skiing trip to Greece is usually lower and it is therefore attracting more and more people in search of a cheaper alternative.
The ski season is Greece starts at the beginning of January and ends usually around the beginning of April.
