Visiting Iceland during the summer

The summer months in Iceland see the Midnight Sun take centre stage. This is a natural phenomenon which affects areas north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle and sees the sun remain visible for 24 hours a day! This will turn your trip in the summer upside down; after all with continuous sunshine, the possibilities are endless and sleep will probably be quite difficult to come by! At the very least, a watch with a 24 hour digital display will definitely come in handy.

You have probably heard that Iceland is a great location for whale watching and it’s the summer months which have given cause to this reputation, for Iceland is one of the most reliable destinations for whale watching in the world during this time. Amazingly, there are 23 different species of whale which can be spotted in the surrounding waters and the best time for viewing is between May and September. Husavik on the northern coast is the best place from which to depart on a tour although it is also possible from Rekyjavik throughout the year.

The summer months open up areas of the island which are otherwise inaccessible during the winter months; not only will you find incredible scenery but a whole new range of activities to choose from. You can gaze at the thermal geysers, visit Puffin Island, play a game of golf at midnight, enjoy endless walking and hiking, go snorkelling between tectonic plates in Silfra and of course sample the weird and wonderful cuisine before embarking on a pub crawl until the wee hours. The options here genuinely are as varied as your wildest dreams!

A holiday in Iceland in the winter

Winter months in Iceland are the exact opposite to summer, with the sun barely managing to peep its hat over the horizon and even then, it only lingers for around 2 hours a day. Bad weather sees the closure of some mountain roads and of course with fewer tourists and just a handful of hours of daylight, the number of activities and tours that are offered are significantly reduced.

It’s not all doom and gloom however, for there are many wonderful reasons to visit Iceland during the winter months. The famous Northern Lights probably take priority in this sense! Your best chance at viewing them will be on a very dark night, ideally when there is no moon. That said, it is advisable to go on a specific tour for this to give you the best opportunity at seeing them.

There is even a hotel in the south of the island whereby staff will come and wake you up when Aurora Borealis appears in the sky! Reykjanes, in the north-west of Iceland is also a great location, especially for the huge geothermal pool located here, as is Thingvellir National Park. Optimal viewing time is said to be between September and March regardless of your chosen viewing location in Iceland however.

Winter is also a fantastic time to enjoy many of the other fantastic activities available in Iceland. Why not, for example, dedicate one day of your trip to snowmobiling or hiking on Vatnajökull glacier, the largest in Europe? Skiing is naturally another fun activity during the winter with a choice of resorts; Akureyri and Dalvik are located quite close to Akureyri Airport whilst the remaining resorts such as Blafjoll and Skalafell are closer to Reykjavik Airport. The likes of the Blue Lagoon and many other geothermal pools found in Iceland can of course be enjoyed at any time of the year too but there’s something extra special about being in a natural, bubbling hot pool while you know that outside its freezing!

The thing with Iceland is that the season depicts almost an entirely different country! One thing that is certain however, is than in a country as dramatically and impressively diverse and untouched as Iceland and with countless activities, your trip here will be unforgettable whether you visit in summer or winter. It’s really more a question of which order you decide to visit!

Sicily is a fantastic island to visit, combining the best of Italian culture with beautiful landscapes

Mt Etna, Sicily

Standing tall at just under 11,000ft, Mount Etna is one of the highest volcanoes in Europe and can be found on the Italian isle of Sicily. It’s also one of the world’s most active volcanoes with a record of eruptions spanning 3,500 years and is seemingly continually spewing smoke or small lava plumes, with a number of minor eruptions having already been reported throughout 2013! Travel here sooner rather than later and take in the beauty of Sicily, with cities like Catania, Trapani and Palermo to explore as well as a variety of great outdoor activities and more to enjoy during a trip here.

After the Volcanic Ash Cloud incident of 2010 when Eyjafjallajökull erupted, Iceland earned itself a bit of an unfavourable reputation when it comes to volcanoes. That aside, it’s becoming an ever increasingly popular place to holiday thanks to its outstanding natural beauty, great aurora viewing and outdoor activities such as glacier hiking, whale watching and more. Another of Iceland’s volcanoes, Kverkfjöll last erupted in 1959 and 1968 and following a number of minor earthquakes in 2010, suspicion is rife with the potential for another eruption in the near future. Get your visit in quick before ash wreaks havoc with European air space again!

With a name that translates to “Mountain of Fire”, Mt Merapi is undoubtedly the most active volcano in Indonesia with a record of almost 70 explosions since 1548. In fact, it is thought to have been active for more than 10,000 years! The city of Yogyakarta is relatively close to the slopes and has seen the devastating effects of fast moving lava first hand but the locals are convinced that spirits will warn them if or when a devastating eruption is due. That said this majestic and powerful beauty is located in a stunning area of Indonesia and would make a wonderful destination to travel to.

Mt Fuji is perhaps one of the world’s most easily recognised volcanoes, despite not having erupted for the last 300 years. Earthquakes that occurred in 2011 have caused scientists to suggest that tectonic plates beneath Mt Fuji are under pressure however, therefore an eruption could occur in coming years; all the more reason to bring your trip to Japan forward! Towering at 12,388ft, Fuji is a sight to behold and with the metropolis of Tokyo as well as endless traditional towns and villages to visit too, a trip to Japan will be unforgettable.

Famous for the devastation unleashed on Pompeii following the AD 79 eruption, Mt Vesuvius is widely considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world. Millions of people live beneath it, making it the most densely populated volcanic region in the world. It was thought to have an eruption cycle of just 20 years but the last recorded explosion was in 1944. Located just 5 miles from Naples and within easy reach of Rome and beautiful countryside, travel here and take in this fabulous region which has so much to offer!

Mt Popocatépetl might be nicknamed Popo for short, but it is the second tallest volcano in North America. It was particularly active during the early 1920’s and then woke up again in 2000 but has since lain silent. This bout of slumber won’t last forever however, so travel here while you can! Mexico City is a mere 40 miles from Popo and as a country chock full of fascinating sights, a trip here will not disappoint.

Nevado del Ruiz last awoke in 1985 with truly terrible consequences, rendering that eruption the worst natural disaster in Colombia’s history. She has since remained silent and with early warning systems in place now, it is unlikely that an eruption would be anywhere near as deadly. As a country high on traveller’s wish lists, with the capital city Bogota and a number of other fascinating towns and cities to explore, don’t let the threat put you off visiting this fantastic part of the world.

Yellowstone National Park is world famous for its unmatched beauty but also for the threat of a super volcano eruption. Slap bang on the border of Austria in the extreme east of Switzerland, Buchs should definitely feature on your itinerary! Start with a tour of the Frey Factory, a company which is considered to be one of the largest suppliers of chocolate in the country but remember that you must pre-book! Once here, explore the immaculate factory and relish the many free samples. Riga, Latvia

Home to half of the entire country’s population, Latvia’s capital city Riga has plenty going for it yet few know much about it. There is a huge concentration of impressive historical buildings which have recently experienced extensive restorations and as a result, Riga is turning heads in its revival as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It also appeals to party goers, boasting a truly eclectic nightlife which rivals some of the bigger names. A city break in Riga is best enjoyed with explorations of the compact but fascinating Old Town and walks along the Daugava River, but for the more adventurous there a number of unusual activities on offer in the outskirts of the city for reasonable prices, ranging from AK-47 shooting to scenic flights over the city and cable car bungee jumps to Husky dog sledding! With Latvia rarely considered as a holiday destination full stop, there is less competition meaning you should be able to bag yourself a bargain with a short stay here.

Lisbon, Portugal

Portugal with its sun blushed coastline and Mediterranean climate is mainly considered a summer holiday destination. The city of Lisbon on the north-west coast of the country bucks the trend and is a fantastic destination year round. It delivers the usual dose of culture, history, architecture, great shopping and interesting attractions that one expects from a capital city, but it also boasts so much more, things which define Lisbon’s personality. Take the modest custard tart for example; no one does it better than Lisbon, and don’t forget the iconic yellow trams which trundle up and down the 7 hills of the city! Furthermore, it’s the only European capital city on the coast and there are some truly excellent day trips, such as a visit to the fairytale-esque Palacio Nacional da Pena, all within very easy reach. Despite all it has to offer, Lisbon is often overlooked in favour of French and Spanish cities and it’s for that reason that you will find it to be much cheaper than its competitors.

Ljubljana, Slovenia

As the saying goes, the best things come in small packages and the same is true of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Unlike Paris and Rome, you won’t find lists as long as your arms of “must-see” attractions; instead, you can explore the quaint Old Town at your leisure, stop for a coffee and nip into any shop or museum you fancy. The population here is no more than 300,000 meaning it has the welcoming feel of a large town as opposed to that overwhelming sense that a bustling city can bestow and it will no doubt charm your socks off! With the stunning Julian Alps and world famous Lake Bled mere hours from Ljubljana by car as well, you can unearth some of the country’s very best treasures with ease. Take home unforgettable memories for a fraction of the cost!

Toilet Seat Museum, Texas

Found in the town of Alamo Heights in Texas, the Toilet Sea Museum is just one of many other oddities in this state alone. The owner, Barney Smith, is what really makes the attraction; he is in his 90’s and looks after his wife who suffers from Alzheimers. He has dedicated his life to creating art work based around toilet seats and his collection now contains over 1,000, adorned in a variety of decorations from paint to memorabilia. Call ahead before you venture here and he will open up his garage where his collection is displayed and regale stories about each and every one of his weird and wonderful toilet seats.

Enchanted Highway, North Dakota

A trip on the Enchanted Highway in North Dakota will certainly make your road trip a bit more interesting; you will find the world’s largest collection of scrap metal sculptures which decorate the road side at various intervals along a 32 mile stretch of highway. Subjects include giant creepy birds, insects, farmers and fish! The structures, created by local metal sculptor Gary Greff, are truly huge, very unique and are the main reason that many venture down this road!

Oregon Vortex, Oregon

Located in Gold Hill, the Oregon Vortex is very much a subject of mystery! The attraction consists of a building of which contains a number of different effects; sceptics say they are optical illusions but the proprietors insist they are the result of paranormal activity. The building, now referred to as the House of Mystery, was originally constructed in 1904 and is said to have slid from its foundations and ended up resting at a strange angle and the surrounding circular area spanning 165ft is known as the Vortex. Objects appear to roll up hill and people appear to change height depending on where they stand. Fact or fiction, it’s probably something you won’t have seen before!

Carhenge, Nebraska

Carhenge in Nebraska was created, as the name suggests, as a tribute to Stonehenge in the UK. The difference however is, of course, the building materials used with stones being replaced by 38 scrap cars that have been spray painted grey, arranged to replicate the original structure’s shape, proportions, and size as closely as possible. It was built by Jim Reinders in time for Summer Solstice in 1987 and has been receiving visitors ever since!

Meteor Crater, Arizona

You can’t really miss the Meteor Crater; measuring 2.4 miles in circumference, 1 mile wide and 550ft deep, it’s just a few minutes from one of Arizona’s main highways and was created when a mammoth meteorite travelling at 26,000 mph smashed into the earth 50,000 years ago. It’s pretty incredible, a bit sobering and definitely unusual! You can’t hike to the bottom of the crater, but you can visit the viewing centre, discovery centre, movie theatre and enjoy the outdoor observation trails on the rim of the crater.

Unclaimed Baggage Centre, Alabama

Ever wondered what happens to lost luggage that isn’t reunited with its owner? Well it makes its way to lost luggage heave of course, in the form of the Unclaimed Baggage Centre in Alabama. If you can’t locate your case but fail to claim it from your airline within 90 days, it gets sent here where shoppers can then buy lost goods and treasures for cut prices! With a warehouse that consumes almost one block of the city centre, it makes for a unique shopping experience.

The Marfa Lights, Texas

The Marfa Lights are a world famous phenomenon and are named after their location in Marfa, Texas. Odd floating orbs of lights can be seen here with apparently no rhyme or reason; spotted in all weather conditions, at all times of days lasting for varying amounts of time. Sceptics suggest that they are reflections of car tail lights or camp fires but the locals remain unconvinced and have done for many years, especially as the lights were first spotted in the late 1800’s. Why not pay a visit to the annual Marfa Lights festival held every Labour Day weekend and see if you spot them!

Largest Ball of Twine, Kansas

For some bizarre reason, there are several claims for the world’s largest ball of twine. The winning string however as awarded by the Guinness Book of Records, can be found in Cawker City, Kansas. Originally rolled by one man, the ball is now continually expanding, added to by the local community at an annual Twine Fest. Records indicate it weighs in excess of 19,000 pounds with more
than 7 million feet of sisal.

Taj Mahal

India’s primary attraction, the breath-taking Taj Mahal is found in the city of Agra and dates back to the early 1600’s. A relic and iconic masterpiece, it is described as “the jewel of Muslim art in India” by UNESCO itself. The building was crafted from white marble by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal and is both one of the most easily recognizable buildings in the world, but also a symbol for eternal love.

Chichen Itza

Not only a World Heritage Site, Chichen Itza is also listed as one of the 7 Wonders of the World and is easily one of the most visited attractions in Mexico. It is the largest archaeological city used by the Mayan civilization and there is plenty to see during a visit here. Explorations of the small towns surrounding the site will give you a greater insight into the way of life here.

Machu Picchu

Nestled on a mountain ridge a staggering 8,000ft above sea level, the mysterious ruins of Machu Picchu are the reward at the end of a demanding hike along the famous Inca Trail, or for those who are less physically inclined, a ride on the train from nearby Cusco. Its alternative name is “the Lost City of the Incas” and as such it is a symbol of the Inca Empire, dating to 1450. Featuring more than 100 stone stair cases, with temples, sanctuaries, parks and residences too, it makes for a fascinating visit.

Stonehenge

One of the most famous and puzzling sites not only in the UK, but the world, Stonehenge features on many must-see lists. UNESCO describe the 2,000 acre site as “one of the archaeologically rich in Europe” with many Neolithic and Bronze Age artefacts having been discovered over the years. The mammoth monument that stands here remains the subject of much speculation and is the main attraction.

Grand Canyon National Park

With a history going back close to 2 billion years, the Grand Canyon National Park is a fascinating and undeniably impressive feat of nature; one of America’s very best. Carved out by the Colorado River, the canyon is close to 5,000ft deep and incredibly vast. A visit here will be powerful, with panoramas guaranteed to catch your breath.

Easter Island

Found off the coast of Chile in the South Pacific Ocean, Easter Island is famous for the 887 monumental, but somewhat bizarre, statues called Moai which were crafted by the native Rapanui people. Easter Island is claimed to be the most remote inhabited island in the world.

The Pyramids of Giza

The Egyptian Pyramids have always been a cause for awe and amazement; an architectural feat, for how were these huge buildings erected with no modern tools. Brought to our attention from an early age, the Pyramids are the symbol of Egypt and with many fascinating tales surrounding them, a visit here is a must for many.

Vatican City

Vatican City, where you will find buildings such as St Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, is the Capital of the Catholic Church and thus one of the most sacred places in Christendom. There are truly some incredible sights to see here and although technically classified as a separate country, it is found in Rome, Italy.

Ancient City of Petra

Reviews of Petra frequently include the word “amazing”. Incredibly, the site was carved directly out of burnt orange rock faces and definitely deserves its place on the UNESCO list; find out more about Petra here.

Prambanan Temple

A masterpiece of Hindu culture, Prambana Temple is an incredibly beautiful and graceful building. Built in the 10th century, it is found in Indonesia and the compound is dedicated to Shiva, a major Hindu deity.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

This wonderful domed cathedral is one of Sofia’s main landmarks, visible from around the city. It was built in the early 1900’s in typical Neo Byzantine style and has a belfry that houses 12 bells. The interior is, of course, as equally impressive with stained glass windows, Venetian mosaics, impressive murals and marble decoration in the entrance area.

Boyana Church

Constructed in the 10th century, Boyana Church often tops must-see lists for Sofia; it is found on the outskirts of the city and features on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Incredibly well preserved, this medieval monument houses highly impressive frescoes and murals from the 13th century and is considered one of Bulgaria’s greatest treasures.

National Palace of Culture

The National Palace of Culture is found in central Sofia and features more than one hundred works in the exhibition complex including paintings, woodcarvings, sculptures and tapestries. Constructed from a huge amount of steel and concrete and it is often described as a throw-back example of Soviet-era Communist architecture; it’s worth a look. Nearby you will find “PI Bulgaria“, a large park with a few alfresco cafés that are ideal to relax in and just outside the entrance you will find a set of steps which lead to a handful of underground shops and cafes.

Zhenski Pazar Market

A visit to the market is an enjoyable experience in any city and the Zhenski Pazar market is no difference. The name means “Women’s Market” as it was once only women from the surrounding villages who sold their goods. This is not the case now but it is a great place to come to look for souvenirs, clothes and fresh, local foods including cheeses, fruit and vegetables, nuts and Turkish-inspired treats.

Banya Bashi Mosque

The last surviving mosque from the 70 that were originally found in Sofia, Banya Bashi Mosque is still in operation but is also a popular tourist attraction, even though it is not officially open as one. Visitors are welcome outside of prayer times, as long as they are appropriately dressed. Its attractive domed roof is its best feature, although the blue tiled interior and calligraphy art make the interior impressive to see too.

Mount Vitosha

Overlooking the city from the outskirts, Mount Vitosha will arouse your curiosity and a visit is more than encouraged. Home to a National Park, ski slopes, upmarket resorts in the foothills and stunning panoramas you won’t be disappointed.

Aphrodite’s Rock

According to ancient tradition, the sea stack off the south west coast of Paphos is the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek Goddess of Love and Beauty. It is said she was born of the waves here and in certain weather conditions, when waves break around the rock, the resultant pillar of foam forms a very human-esque shape. Legend suggests that if you swim three times around the rock you will be blessed with eternal youth. The secluded beach is one of the most popular on the island and is ideal for watching the sunset.

Agios Ilarion Castle

The ancient ruins of Agios Ilarion Castle are situated at the end of a challenging uphill walk, with plenty of stairs to tackle, but the remarkably well preserved castle that awaits you at the end is well worth the effort. It is in fact the best preserved of the three forts built by the Byzantines and the Crusaders. At night, the castle is spectacularly lit up and it is said to have been the inspiration for the castle in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. It is best to time your visit here for first thing in the morning or last thing in the afternoon to avoid the heat of the midday sun.

Troodos Mountains

Away from the coastline, the beauty of the Troodos Mountains awaits; spanning the central width of the country, it proves to be the perfect outdoor escape. The lower foothills, adorned in varied flora and fauna, prove a playground for nature lovers, walkers and hikers with traditional villages and forgotten monasteries to explore, whilst the highest peak, Mount Olympus, offers excellent skiing.

Tombs of the Kings

The Tombs of the Kings are another stunning remnant of the country’s long history. Built underground, the tombs were carved out of solid rock with some decorated with pillars. No Kings were officially buried here, it was actually the resting place of higher members of society but the grand style of the tombs gave them their name. A must for history fans!

Paphos Harbour & Castle

Paphos is one the most popular cities in Cyprus with plenty to see and do. Two of the biggest alluring features however are the harbour and the castle which overlooks it. Having been used for various purposes throughout its lifetime, the castle makes for an interesting visit and the views from the top are fantastic.

Kourion

Arguably another of the most fantastic archaeological sites on the island, Kourion is an important ancient city with excavations having revealed an ancient amphitheatre, which has been fully restored and is now used for various concerts in addition to large villas filled with mosaics, amongst many more gems.

Protaras

As an island, it is fair to say that the coastline plays a major role of the appeal of Cyprus but Protaras is one of the most celebrated stretches of beach. The exceptionally clear water is a given, but the prevalence of sea life and shipwrecks around Protaras make it a top choice for snorkelling and diving.

Freycinet Peninsula

Jutting out into the ocean of the east coast of the island, the beautiful Freycinet Pensisula National Park is rough and rugged and the setting for a host of enjoyable experiences. Surrounded by stunning mountains, you can go kayaking in Wineglass Bay, bask on endless sandy beaches, go wildlife and bird watching and walk among forests and heathlands.

Cataract Gorge

One of the island’s most popular recreational attractions, Cataract Gorge is the found at the lower portion of South Esk River just on the outskirts of central Launceston, a mere two mile drive from the city centre. Test yourself with abseiling and rock climbing, have a go at hang gliding, go walking in the bush land or take a dip in the swimming pool and watch the wallabies at dusk.

Port Arthur

Port Arthur is one of Australia’s most important open air museums and heritage sites. In operation between 1830 and 1877, it quickly became Australia’s largest convict settlement and today you can tour the penitentiary, the ruins of the church and the model prison. The peninsula on which it was built adds to the appeal of a visit.

Bruny Island Cruises

Bruny Islands sits just off the southern coast of Tasmania and is best visited on board a boat cruise. See a great range of wildlife including seals, dolphins, whales, seabirds and eagles and tour the impressive coastline and sea cliffs of the island.

Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park

Salamanca Market

A favourite among locals and visitors alike, the Salamanca Market in Hobart is not to be missed. The beautiful waterfront truly comes alive with the hustle and bustle of the Saturday market. Top up on colourful fruits and vegetables and peruse everything from arts, crafts and clothes to music and books, and generally enjoy the atmosphere of one of Australia’s best known outdoor markets.

Golf

Whether you are a newbie or seasoned professional, golfing in Tasmania is an enjoyable past time and there are more than 80 golf courses to choose from. Found in spectacular settings, you’ll be warmly welcomed at whichever course you select with every course proving both challenging but enjoyable. Some of the more popular choices include Ulverstone and Kingston Beach.

Tahune Forest Airwalk

Found within the South West Wilderness National Park, the Tahune Forest Airway offers a rare opportunity to experience the forest from above. The Tahune Forest Walk winds its way through the leaves at a height of 48m above the ground, with swinging bridges and wondrous views.

The Museum of Old and New Art

Attracting thousands of visitors every month, the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart is undoubtedly one of the most popular attractions in Tasmania. Opened in 2011 and boasting unique exhibits, this world class art museum is reason enough to consider a visit to Tasmania.

Cradle Mountain National Park

Another area in which to appreciate Tasmania’s stunning natural beauty is at Cradle Mountain National Park. Spectacular panoramas abound with Lake St Clair at the southern end of the park and Cradle Mountain itself taking centre stage and diverse flora and fauna evident at every turn. Alhambra Palace

Found in the city of Granada, Alhambra Palace is one of the best known and most impressive sites in the entire country. Fantastic decoration adorns both the outside and within and with extensive gardens to tour too, a visit here is a must when exploring the region. Due to its popularity, it’s advisable to buy your tickets in advance.

Flamenco

Do attend a flamenco show, which are abundant all over Andalucía. This captivating style of dance has been assigned as a world cultural heritage by UNESCO and you can watch all types of shows at famous venues in Seville and Jerez, although there is often a flamenco bar in most towns. Combine the show with deliciously authentic Spanish tapas!

Andalucian Horses

Another staple of the region are the Andalucían horses, a breed specific to this area. There are often horse shows held in various towns and cities, paired with flamenco music, so if you are looking for a traditional event to attend, this is a great option.

Beaches

With over 1,000km of stunning coastline at your disposal, it would almost be a crime not to enjoy some of the beautiful beaches. Whatever your preference, there is a beach for you and with a little exploration you will be able to find your own little slice of heaven on which to soak up the Andalucían sun.

Sierra Nevada Mountains

During the summer months the Sierra Nevada Mountains are a natural playground, ideal for hikers and walkers to explore the cracks and crevices of the upper portions and lush forests in the lower foothills. During the winter, the mountains are blanketed in buckets of snow creating some fantastic skiing opportunities.

Malaga and Picasso

Malaga is of course the home of world famous artist Picasso and it is here that you can find the highly visited Picasso museum. Although his work is exhibited in art galleries around the world, nothing quite beats viewing his work in his home town, or seeing his home just around the corner for that matter.

Seville

The capital of Andalucía, Seville, is definitely deserving of a mention. With some stunning buildings to see, such as the gothic cathedral and the Real Alcazar palace, as well as museums and other landmarks, your time here will be well spent.
