Renowned for its spectacular NYE fireworks, London is an ideal choice, particularly as the show is free! For this reason, the display is exceptionally popular so you are best to head down to the South Bank lining the Thames as early as you can during the day in order to claim your spot! Having celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and playing host to the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics in the summer, you can be sure that this year’s fireworks display will be even better than usual to cap a successful and memorable year!
Can’t wait for the 31st? Head to Tokyo where the celebrations kick off on 29th December! The usual fireworks will light up the sky but there are also other ways to mark the stroke of midnight; at Zojoji Temple, thousands of balloons with wishes attached to them are released into the night and there are many countdown parties across the city. Many of the locals leave the city during this time to spend the holidays with their family and you will find that some of the major tourist attractions close, but there is plenty going on and a great atmosphere to enjoy! The districts of Shibuya, Marunouchi and Chiba are great places to consider with plenty of bars and clubs!
Hundreds of thousands of people spend New Year’s Eve at the iconic Times Square, watching the famous ball drop as the clock strikes midnight! If you want to experience the celebrations in person this year, rather than from your living room watching it on the TV, then you’ll need to get there early. Spectators have been known to start congregating in the Square from as early as 2pm! Alternatively, take your pick from New York bars and restaurants surrounding the square for great views without the same degree of hustle and bustle!
Can’t choose where to spend New Year’s Eve? In Vegas you don’t need to decide as you can enjoy a slice of celebrations from around the world in one frantic night, partying on the strip in Las Vegas! See the Eiffel Tower lit up by the stunning fireworks display, ring in 2013 in Rome, sing your heart out in the Sahara and celebrate on the canals of Venice! With the casinos, restaurants and the strip itself packed with people, Vegas has more energy on New Year’s Eve than ever! There are tonnes of different parties to choose from with a host of celebrities and acts performing from Celine Dion to Nicki Minaj; wherever you choose though, you best book up quick!
What better setting to ring in the New Year than the backdrop of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and iconic Opera House? As one of the most popular destinations in the world, Sydney is a top choice; see it light up with a bang! The celebrations start early in the day and this year the organisers are boasting 100,000 individual pyrotechnics effects once the darkness descends! With the Harbour of Light Parade to enjoy as well as parties happening across the city, you will be sure to get 2013 off to a great start here.
