Ash Cloud Causes More Last Minute Bookings!

May 20th, 2010

Last years car hire shortage in Spain meant many customers were hit with prices double that of the previous year. To avoid paying over the odds, a large number of our customers had started booking in advance to secure the lowest price possible for their car hire. In fact, bookings were on average 44 days in advance.

Unfortunately the ongoing Volcanic ash crisis have discouraged customers from continuing to book ahead. Since the Ash Cloud hit the UK, bookings have dropped back to just 37 days in advance. We do have some very organised customers who are booking well in advance, however there is a growing trend for booking just a few days before travelling. This will ultimately lead to paying much higher prices than necessary. At peak times, availability will become an issue as last year, Economy Car Hire urges you to book in advance to avoid paying over the odds.

When booking your car hire, make sure you add cancellation protection. It is available to purchase at the time of booking your car hire. If this has been purchased, a full refund (less the charge for Cancellation Protection) will be given. For as little as £2.50, you can protect yourself against the risk of losing up to 50% of the rental value if you have to cancel at the last minute. Economy Car Hire recommends that when you book your car hire, you ensure cancellation protection is added.

New Plane Tax to be Introduced

May 18th, 2010

It has been announced that Air Passenger duty (APD) is to be replaced with a tax on planes. APD was never popular with the tourist industry and increased the cost of long haul flights particularly. The rates of the new plane tax are yet to be confirmed. Passengers were paying tax depending on the distance between London and their destination. This impacted long haul destinations such as the Caribbean and Thailand most heavily. Major travel associations had lobbied the UK government to get rid of this tax.

The new tax will favour those airlines whose planes are the most efficient and will be absorbed into the headline price of a flight, instead of being a costly added extra. Economy Car Hire supports this change in taxation as it will encourage pricing to be more transparent.

Economy Car Hire is unique in providing all-inclusive prices for car hire at all destinations.   Full CDW with no insurance excess, free additional driver and all airports taxes and surcharges, so the customer can see the price they are going to pay straight away, with no nasty surprises.

This honest and upfront approach helps the customer to make a more informed choice about every element of their holiday and avoid any nasty pitfalls.

Airport Parking Charges High Across Tourist Hotspots!

May 14th, 2010

Consumer watchdog Which? has called Airport Parking charges at some UK airports ridiculous. Economy Car Hire offers some advice regarding how to save money when booking your Airport Parking. The closest carparks to an airport, are usually the most expensive. Shuttle bus services can be used to get to the airport from those carparks a little further afield, and these too tend to be cheaper.

Prices vary with an off site carpark, 15 minutes from the airport, costing you from £54. Parking on site can cost you nearly double this, and with such a variety of companies to choose from, it’s hard to know what do do. We would recommend trying to find parking off site to save money.

How do rates compare with Airport Parking in Spain and Portugal? BAA states that rates start in the UK at £5.99 per day. If you were leaving your car at Alicante or Malaga Airports, rates start from €6 per day, rising to €15 depending on which car park you wish to use. Parking at Faro Airport seems to be much more expensive, with rates starting at €10.70 per day.

It seems that high Airport Parking charges are an issue in Spain and Portugal as well. Our advice would be to consider a car park a little further away if price is an issue. You do get what you pay for, so the higher the price, the closer the car park. Always book your Airport Parking in advance, never turn up and pay on the day, this will cost you more. So, a little forward planning, could cut your Airport Parking Charges in half.
